Violet = Modesty apparently

When I wrote Violet and the Panther I must admit I didn’t look up the name. I wanted that coloured coat and hat because I like it and the way it stands out against autumn leaves. The name followed naturally.

The meaning – A flower usually taken as symbolizing modesty, and fabled by the ancients to have sprung from the blood of the boaster Ajax. (Brewer’s phrase fable edited by Susie Dent, no less).

Well, the Greeks in that time were all boasters according to Homer weren’t they.

I’m not sure that my Violet is modest. I’m not sure it really comes up.

Anyway the colour indicates the love of truth and the truth of love. The blue violet symbolizes faithful love.

I guess I must have known that subconsciously because I’ve written a series of books which feature this gently bickering but loving pair saving each other from various dangers.

I think I may have given the game away about whether she gets eaten or not in book one 😀
